Golden Bamboo Cafe
in 2024
Golden Bamboo Cafe inspired by the graceful form of the Wau—a traditional kite deeply rooted in Malaysian culture.
Its lightness, movement, and geometry are translated into a flowing bamboo structure that appears to lift gently from the ground, responding to wind, light, and landscape.
Built hand in hand with local communities, the cafe celebrates shared knowledge and craftsmanship.
Locally sourced bamboo species—buluh beting, buluh semantan, and buluh mata rusa—are carefully selected and assembled, each contributing its unique strength, texture, and character to the structure.
The construction process becomes as meaningful as the final space, strengthening local skills and livelihoods.
The roof is formed using pelupuh bamboo panels, allowing filtered sunlight to enter throughout the day.
Light slips through the woven surface, creating a warm, ever-changing atmosphere within the cafe while reducing the need for artificial lighting.
Together, natural materials, daylight, and community effort shape Golden Bamboo Cafe into a place that feels rooted, open, and alive—where culture, sustainability, and everyday life meet.
