Islamic Green Village, Kuala Kangsar

Surau Buluh is the heart of the Islamic Green Village, designed with the traditional “Bumbung Lima Perak” concept that reflects local heritage and Islamic values. Built using approximately 4,000 bamboo poles, the surau stands as a symbol of harmony between faith, architecture, and nature.

The structure incorporates buluh betong imported from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, used as the main columns for its strength and durability, alongside buluh wulung as supporting pillars.

The roof is crafted from buluh apus, forming an open, wall-less design that allows natural airflow, light, and a strong connection to the surrounding environment.

As part of the Islamic Green Village development, the surau embraces sustainability by utilising natural resources as building materials and integrating green elements into its beautiful design.

Selected for its longevity of 60 to 70 years, buluh betong, used for the main columns is carefully treated with boric acid to enhance durability, while other bamboo elements are cleaned naturally without chemical treatment. Only mature bamboo, aged at least five years, is used to ensure structural integrity.

Beyond the surau, parts of the pondok school within the village are also constructed using bamboo, reinforcing the community’s commitment to sustainable living and education. Surau Buluh stands not only as a place of worship, but as a living example of environmentally responsible Islamic architecture rooted in tradition and care for the natural world.
